Citric Acid – A Review

June 6th, 2010

The foods you eat play just as big of a role if you want to get rid of your heartburn. Food items which are acidic will make it easier to get heartburn. Juices with citric acid, such as orange juice and grapefruit juice, caffeinated drinks, and alcohol are things that are better limited. It does not contain any malt. It is used as an ingredient added to foods in order to enhance the texture and flavor. It is also used in many nutritional supplements. Often it is free from gluten, but not always. You see, it all depends on which type of starch it comes from. For example, if it comes from corn, potato or rice then yes it will be gluten free. If on the other hand it comes from wheat or rye, then no, it will not be free from gluten.

Citric acid is often purchased for home use for many of the reasons listed above. When kept at room temperature, it will maintain its crystallized form. This type of acid can be created in either a water-free form (anhydrous) that crystallizes from hot water or can become crystallized with the assistance of cold water (monohydrate). However, by the time many people purchase the product, it is already in a crystalline powder form.

When creating a diet plan to reduce acid reflux, it is more important to concentrate on what not to eat rather than make a list of what you should eat. Foods and drinks to avoid include all caffeinated beverages (tea, coffee and most sodas), any fruits containing citric acid (oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes), all spicy foods, chocolate, creamed soups, whole milk, anything fatty or fried (like fast food), and peppermint or spearmint. Eating low-fat, fresh foods without too many spices is the key to planning an effective acid reflux reduction diet.

This acid also helps in treatment of blackheads and dries out the excess surface oil on the skin. It is also thought that glycolic acids stimulate collagen production to some extent. This acid also keeps the skin moisturized by keeping water bound to the skin and prevents drying of skin. It can also bleach some spots on the skin. One added advantage of glycolic acid is that it helps other skin care ingredients reach deeper in the skin and makes them more effective. Glycolic acid is on the frontier of skin care.

Buy a fresh lemon from your local supermarket, size doesn’t really matter. Cut the lemon in half and, over a bowl or dish, squeeze the lemon juice from the half of lemon, once you have gathered enough lemon juice to treat your acne put the remainder of the lemon in the fridge for future use. Dab a cotton wool ball with lemon juice and apply liberally to the acne affected areas. You may feel a slight sting as you apply, that is perfectly normal.
